UTUQQANAAT INAAT

Utuqqanaat Inaat (a place for Elders) is located in the Maniilaq Health Center building and is a beautiful facility that opened in October 2011. It is home to up to 18 Elders and is specifically designed for individuals that have long term care needs that require 24-7 attention. This includes personal care, medication management, meal preparations and service, snacks and hydration, a full range of activities designed to meet individual needs, including exercise, outings in our facility bus that includes a wheelchair lift, physical therapy and social services.

Following other innovative models across the United States, the facility is designed specifically to have a homelike atmosphere.  From home cooked meals where food is brought to their table straight from the kitchen to beautiful artwork and local artifacts everywhere, every touch is designed with our Elders in mind.

The facility currently hosts a monthly niqipiaq, also known as a potluck where traditional dishes are brought in by the Kotzebue Elders Council and served. Most recently, the facility obtained approval from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation to serve traditional wild game including caribou and moose on a regular basis. The Traditional Foods Program has received national recognition as a unique and culturally sensitive service for our Elders.

Our residents call Utuqqanaat Inaat their home and staff is responsible for always maintaining this philosophy of care in our daily programming.  For more information, please call 1-907-442-7975 and speak to the administrator or social worker to schedule a tour or drop by for a meal.
