JUNE 2025: Caring for Your Feet

Why Foot Care Matters

Diabetes can damage nerves and reduce blood flow to your feet, making injuries harder to feel and slower to heal. This can lead to serious foot problems if not carefully managed.

Daily Foot Care Routine

– Check your feet every day for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or sore spots

– Wash feet in warm (not hot) water and dry thoroughly, especially between toes

– Apply lotion to the tops and bottoms of feet (but not between toes)

– Always wear footwear, even indoors, to protect your feet

Traditional Footwear Wisdom

– Properly fitting mukluks or shoes distribute pressure evenly

– Natural materials allow feet to breathe

– Multiple layers provide protection from temperature extremes

Action Steps This Month:

1. Start a daily foot checking routine

2. Keep a small mirror near your bed to help see the bottoms of your feet (Call the Maniilaq Diabetes Program if you would like us to send you a special foot examination mirror)

3. Schedule a foot exam with the village health aide or your provider
