Yonna Fields – Employee Spotlight

Tell us a little about yourself.  I am originally from Cleveland, Ohio but am relocating from the Raleigh, North Carolina area.  I have a B.A. in Psychology and a M.A. in Public Administration.  I enjoy traveling, skiing, dining out and now that I’m in Kotzebue, online shopping.

Where did you work before moving to Kotzebue?  I worked as a Child Protective Services Social Worker before relocating to Kotzebue.  I worked with families on keeping children safely maintained in the home by making referrals to the appropriate services.

What made you decide to come to Kotzebue?  I was looking for a  change in my life and for some excitement.  I had applied to Maniilaq about six years ago but the position had lost its funding and was no longer available.  Maniilaq has always been in the back of my mind ever since.

What is your favorite part of living in the region so far?  The people.  The people are very nice, warm and welcoming.  I am really happy to be here.

Have you been to other communities in the region?  Not yet, but I plan to.  I want to experience as much of Alaska as I can.

What do you do as the patient advocate?  I like doing the social services consultations.  I have an opportunity to work directly with patients.  I work with patient concerns/feedback as well.
