Students pursuing college degrees will have a new funding opportunity starting in Academic Year 2008-2009.

James “Qigñak” Wells Endowment Scholarship

The Maniilaq Association James “Qigñak” Wells Endowment Scholarship Program will provide financial assistance to students registered in accredited degree programs related to Maniilaq operations such as: Health Professions; Information Services; Human Resources; Accounting/Finance; Administration/Leadership; Planning and Development; Engineering; Social Services (Social Work, Counseling, etc.); Tribal Government; Education; Law; etc.

Applications will be accepted from students who are members of a Federally Recognized Tribe in the following priority: 1) Enrolled members of tribes within the Northwest Arctic Borough; 2) Enrolled members of other Alaska Native Tribes; and 3) Enrolled members of a Federally recognized American Indian Tribe. Preference is given to Graduate Students, as well as Junior and Senior Level college students; however, all students are encouraged to apply.

Up to five students will receive funding during the Academic Year 2008-2009 and applications are available now for the June 30, 2008 deadline.

Higher Education Scholarships - Maniilaq Association offers Bureau of Indian Affairs scholarship to provide financial assistance to eligible Alaskan Natives from the villages of Ambler, Shungnak, Kobuk, Kivalina and Deering through four programs:

1. The Higher Education Scholarship may fund students attending college.
2. The Adult Vocational Training grant may fund students attending a vocational technical school.
3. The Direct Employment Assistance programs assist individuals in becoming qualified for jobs, and job placement.
4. The Adult Basic Educational/General Educational Development (ABE/GED). Services for preparation and testing are provided through the Northwest Arctic Borough School District/Alaska Technical Center.

The Paaraq Scholarship is designed to support Alaskan Native students, residing in the Maniilaq service area, who are interested in health-related/hospital administration fields.
